Few Real Truths

Mar. 3rd, 2008 | 09:11 am

(The Disease)
Who are we to believe?
It's a question of faith anymore
Corruption is accepted, overshadowing the good
A power that lies everywhere has become
All too real in the world today
The surrounding force that binds our society
Is what will (ultimately) tear it apart
There are few real truths to believe in
So when can we say the line has been crossed?
Persistence to bank on everything
From death, destruction, starvation, poverty, and war
Unify us through propaganda/Ignore the greed
(The Medication)
The only method of survival
Is to keep hope for something completely true
To wait search for a new age of trust
And break down the walls of lies
(The Paradox)
Let me know that I'm awake
The nightmare continues
Walk on, but never forget the past
The road ahead leaves questions unanswered
Leaves us to face a violent storm
The haunting reminder that few of us will remain
After the fall of an "empire"
Obligates us to form a bond
And take control of what will be lost

First Song/Poem/Whatever You Want to Call It

Jul. 17th, 2007 | 02:55 pm

[S]lack

Justifying your lack of detail
With less hazardous concerns
Make the public feel your power
While you sit back
And watch the towers burn

Your unnecessary actions
Led us in the wrong direction
And now we're forced to bleed
Amongst the turmoil of our enemies
Day after day
And nothing resolves itself

Your lack of approval
From your beloved fans
Makes you to be less of a martyr
Than what you could have potentially been
As you struggle to find the right words
Or combination thereof

You lack the heart it takes
To be in such a position
That can lead others to such explosive demises
With the explosive devices
Of fear that you have instilled in us all
(And rightfully so)

You lack the ability to listen
To be told No, my son
You will not have others do your bidding
And be in control of innocence
While you rest comfortably in your peaceful slumber
Just know that we have lost

I've been reluctant to speak out publicly about the war and our country's status ever since the whole mess started. I've discussed bits and pieces here and there with friends, family, and co-workers, but never to the extent that I'm about to. This is just kind of an introduction to let anyone who is reading this know that if you really think about what I'm saying, it all adds up. So, without further ado, here goes nothing.

What was once a respected and powerful nation has turned into a literal target. It seems that each day since the tragic events of 9/11, the United States is losing more and more respect from countries across the world. And why? Is it because we have a leader who is so hell-bent on making this country of ours a pristine, aryan nation, that he has seemingly lost sight of the fact that more and more American blood is being spilled each day onto the soil of our so-called "enemies?" Is it because our nation is so overrun with greed that corporations have resorted to price-gouging in order to ensure that the CEOs and "head honchos" of said corporations continue to bask in the luxury that they are so familiar to? Is it because, while millions of people are dying of starvation and malnutrition-related diseases across the world, we are celebrating the victory of an individual who can shove over 60 hot dogs down his throat in twelve minutes? Could it be that all of these are factors? It could, and it is.

Never before has our country been so corrupt. We are indeed in a living hell. Since January of 2001, this country has witnessed some of the most horrifying events in its history. We've seen perhaps the greatest corporate cover-up scandal in history with Enron, who raped hundreds out of their hard-earned money. We've seen terrorism enter this country in a way it never has before. American citizens have had to watch their homes be washed away in the streets of New Orleans.

No, I'm not accusing the president of starting Hurricane Katrina, but I am accusing him of a less-than-spectacular relief effort that a five year old and his collection of action figures could have carried out better. At least a five year old has a sense of compassion for other living beings, a trait that our Commander-In-Chief seems to lack heavily. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't a heartfelt, caring, SANE human being that is in charge of a nation look at the situation in Iraq and say, hey, maybe it's time we get the hell out of here. Maybe it's just my lack of sleep talking.

Comedian Lewis Black made several points in his HBO special "Lewis Black: Red, White, and Screwed" that are not only valid, but so blatantly obvious that you actually feel kind of dumb for overlooking them. He speaks of our president's concern with gay marriage, an issue that "W" seems to take more concern with than the lives being lost overseas. Mr. Black describes the president's train of thought as being, "If we could just stop these queers from getting married, everything will be alright!" Maybe, even if it's just for a second, our president should open his eyes a little bit wider.

This is not an anti-American post. This is not a terrorist action. I'm just pissed off. We live in a country where a group of people exists, a group that, just now, years and years later, decided that drinking bottled water is bad for the environment. We live in a country where the "most powerful man in the world" can't even speak proper English (look, kids, its not a crime to fumble over your words, but when you're running a country, you might want to know what you're saying before it comes out your mouth). We live in a country where gas prices are so high, people are being forced to resort to other methods of transportation rather than cars, perhaps the greatest invention in the past 200 years. [As a side note to that, if we find out that the price gouging of gasoline was a ploy by environmentalists to save our Ozone layer, some shit is going to go down.]

We could have it worse. I will not argue that. Things could be way worse than they are. Maybe I'm just too idealistic, but I really am disappointed in a country that is so overwhelmed with greed that money is becoming more valuable than life. I just wish that some people would stop thinking for themselves for a day or two, and start caring about others. I've never been more excited for a day to come than I am now: 01/01/09.

The Random Thing That Happened to Me Already Today (aka My First Entry)

Jul. 10th, 2007 | 09:03 am

I was walking in a building on campus today to get to the library [my current location], and I turned a corner to see an older man, probably in his 50s or 60s. Nothing strange about that, right? Well, he had a hula hoop with him, and he was spinning it on the ground so it would come back to him [get a visual]. He caught it a couple times, then the next time, the hula hoop went flying towards a door, and he kind of half-ran/half-walked after it. I walked past him as he was retrieving it, and he looked up at me. Neither of us said anything. He gave me this "please-tell-me-you-didn't-see-that" look, and I shot back with the "oh-yes-i-totally-saw-the-whole-thing" look. It was very awkward and uncomfortable, but it sort of made my day.
